Description:

Any of the several steels containing 12 to 30% chromium as the principal alloying element. They usually exhibit passivity in aqueous solutions. They are more resistant to rusting and staining than plain carbon and low alloy steels. This is caused by the addition of chromium. Stainless steel is a generic entry with detail provided by these subentries: austenitic, cast, ferritic, and martensitic.
