Samarium (Sm) Metal

Samarium (Sm) is a rare earth metal that does not occur freely in nature. It is a lustrous, brittle, silvery-yellow metal that tarnishes in the air and rapidly dissolves in most acids. Samarium has unique magnetic properties.

Typical Applications

Samarium’s most common use in combination with cobalt is permanent magnets for high-temperature applications. It is used in optical lasers, nuclear reactor control rods, and phosphors for displays. Various specialty glasses use Samarium, and it is used as an inorganic and organic catalyst in the electronics and ceramics industries.
