Garnet Grain, Sand, Powder

Garnet is an industrial gemstone comprised of a group of silicate minerals that are common rock-forming minerals in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rock types, with high hardness and density. Garnets are a “heavy mineral” derived from either Almandite or Andradite deposits.

READE can offer a domestically mined garnet from New York.
Typical Chemical Analysis

Silicon Dioxide = 37%
Iron Oxide = 33%
Aluminum Oxide = 25%
Magnesium Oxide = 4%
Calcium Oxide = 1%
Manganese Oxide = 1%

Typical Applications

Garnet grains, sands, or powders are typically used as an abrasive and commonly as a replacement for silica sand in sandblasting. An abrasive garnet can be broadly divided into two categories, blasting grade and water jet grade, with the larger grain sizes used for faster work and the smaller ones used for finer finishes. Garnett is also used in non-skid surfaces, and garnet sand is used for water filtration media. Whole stones are used heavily as semi-precious stones.

> 60 mesh (250 micrometers) – sandblasting.
60-200 mesh (250-74 micrometers) – water jet cutting.
<200 mesh (74 micrometers) - glass polishing and lapping.

Sustainable Qualities

Garnet, a naturally occurring mineral, is a sustainable material that can be used in a variety of applications such as sandblasting, waterjet cutting, and polishing. It is an abundant and durable material that does not degrade over time, making it a more environmentally friendly option than synthetic abrasives. Additionally, Garnet is often recycled and reused, contributing to a circular economy and reducing waste.
