Xenon(II) fluoride, XeF2, Xenon difluoride, CAS# 13709-36-9, EINECS 237-251-2,
- Xenon Difluoride Chemical Formula:
Xe + F2 → XeF2
- Xenon Difluoride Chemical Name:
Xenon Difluoride
- Xenon Difluoride Description:
Xenon difluoride is a powerful fluorinating agent with the chemical formula XeF2, and one of the most stable xenon compounds. Like most covalent inorganic fluorides it is moisture sensitive. It decomposes on contact with light or water vapour. Xenon difluoride is a dense, white crystalline solid. It has a nauseating odour but low vapor pressure.[4] It has a strong characteristic infrared doublet at 550 cm-1 and 556 cm-1.

- Xenon Difluoride Typical Applications:
1) Xenon difluoride is a strong fluorinating and oxidising agent and one of the most stable xenon compounds. With fluoride ion acceptors, it forms XeF+ and Xe2F+3 species which are even more powerful fluorinators.
2) Xenon difluoride is also used as a gaseous etchant for silicon, particularly in the production of microelectromechanical systems, (MEMS).
3) Metallized xenon difluoride has potential future use as a new class of solid fuels.
- Xenon Difluoride Typical Packaging:
1) PTFE bottles or metal cylinders
2) Safety Comment: Xenon difluoride is unstable. Air sensitive. Moisture sensitive. All xenon fluorides must be protected from moisture to avoid formation of xenon trioxide, a colorless, nonvolatile solid that's dangerously explosive when dry. Its solution, the so-called xenic acid, is a stable weak acid but a strong oxidizing agent.
- Xenon Difluoride TSCA (SARA Title III) Status:
1) CAS# 13709-36-9 is listed on the TSCA inventory
- Xenon Difluoride Product Safety Overview:
1) Danger! Explosive when mixed with combustible material. Causes eye and skin burns. Causes digestive and respiratory tract burns. Air sensitive.
2) Corrosive to exposed tissues. Inhalation of vapors may result in pulmonary edema and chemical
pneumonitis. Nonflammable. Reacts violently and decomposes to toxic compounds on contact with
moisture. Source: BOC
