Boron Amorphous (B)

Boron (B) is a semi-metal of which several allotropes exist. Boron is very hard and very resistant to heat. One main allotrope is a brown amorphous powder when pure. It is more reactive than crystalline boron as it slowly oxidizes in the air and can react violently with acid.

Typical Applications

Amorphous boron is used in the automotive industry as an igniter in airbags and belt tighteners. It is used in pyrotechnics and rockets as an additive in flares, igniters and delay compositions, solid propellant fuels, and explosives. Other uses include the preparation of refractory metal borides, a sintering additive for advanced ceramics, a reducing additive in fluxes for soldering stainless steel, and a neutron absorber in nuclear technology.
