Chemical Name: Silicon dioxide
Chemical Formula: SiO2
a) Silica is noncombustible, colorless or white, tasteless "crystals". It occurs naturally in the crystalline and amorphous forms. The specific gravity and melting point depend on the crystalline form. Silica is known to occur in 17 crystalline phases or modes and five amorphous phases.
b) Sand grades differ according to the amount of SiO2 in the composition and depending upon the percentage of other elements . The other elements are mainly minor percentages of light element and minute fractions of the heavier elements. Purer sands have a very high melting point ( 1700 °C ) . Depending upon the elements constituting the sand grains ( of which all but silica can be considered impurities ) the color of sand ranges from brownish to pure white . Low content silica sand may be grayish white due to the presence of other impurities ( e.g. aluminum).
c) Depending upon the grain size and regularity, sand is used both as an abrasive, a thickener and as a filtration medium . Sand and gravel are the principal components in traditional building industry.
