  • Coltan Designations:

Chemical Formula: Fe++Ta2O6

  • Coltan Description:

a) Columbite-tantalite — coltan for short — is a dull metallic ore found in major quantities in the eastern areas of Congo. When refined, coltan becomes metallic tantalum, a heat-resistant powder that can hold a high electrical charge.

b) These properties make it a vital element in creating capacitors, the electronic elements that control current flow inside miniature circuit boards. Tantalum capacitors are used in almost all cell phones, laptops, pagers and many other electronics. The recent technology boom caused the price of coltan to skyrocket.

c) To the best of our knowledge, the legal mining source for our Coltan is shown below.

  • Coltan Mining Locations Sourced:

    1) Upper Bear Gulch, Lawrence Co., South Dakota, USA,
    2) Red Lake, Ontario,
    3) Etelä-Suomen Lääni, Finland, 4) Urals Region, Russia
    4) Newry, Maine
    5) Amelia County, Virginia

  • Coltan Typical Applications:

    a) The principal ore of niobium and tantalum, used mostly as an additive in steel making and in superalloys; used in metallurgy for heat-resistant alloys, rust-proofing (stainless steel) and electromagnetic superconductors. Brazil and Canada are leading producers. Used in cell phones and computer chips.

    b) Tantalite is the most widespread tantalum mineral and makes for an important ore of the industrially useful metal.

    c) Tantalum is used in alloys for strength and higher melting points, in glass to increase the index of refraction, and in surgical steel, as it is non-reactive and non-irritating to body tissues
