Chemical Name: Samarium

Chemical Formula: Sm

  • Samarium (Sm) Metal & Powder Description:

A rare earth metal of the lanthanide group, samarium does not occur free in nature, but is found with other rare earths in many minerals. Samarium is a lustrous, brittle, silvery-yellow metal that tarnishes in air. It is similar to iron in hardness. Samarium and cobalt combined in SmCo5, having been used to make a permanent magnet with the highest resistance to demagnetization of any known material.

  • Samarium (Sm) Metal & Powder Typical Applications:

Uses of Samarium include:

  1. Carbon-arc lighting for the motion picture industry (together with other rare earth metals).
  2. CaF2 crystals for use in optical masers or lasers.
  3. As a neutron absorber in nuclear reactors.
  4. For alloys and headphones.
  5. Samarium-cobalt magnets; SmCo5 and Sm2Co17 are used in making permanent magnet materials that have high resistance to demagnetization when compared to other permanent magnet materials. These materials have high coercivities and intrinsic coercivities. Samarium-cobalt combinations have recently found use in high-end magnetic pickups for guitars and related musical instruments.
  6. Samarium(II) iodide is used as a chemical reagent in organic synthesis, for example in the Barbier reaction.
  7. Samarium oxide is used in optical glass to absorb infrared light.
  8. Samarium compounds act as sensitizers for phosphors excited in the infrared.
  9. Samarium oxide is a catalyst for the dehydration and dehydrogenation of ethanol.
  10. Samarium-neodymium dating is useful for determining the age relationships of rocks and meteorites.
  11. Radioactive Samarium-153 is used in medicine to treat the severe pain associated with cancers that have spread to bone. The drug is called "Quadramet".
