Potassium Ferrate(VI) / Super Paramagnetic Iron Description:
1) Potassium ferrate (Fe6) is the chemical compound with the formula K2FeO4. This purple, paramagnetic salt is a rare example of an Fe(VI) compound. In most of its compounds, iron has the oxidation state II (i.e., Fe2+) or III (Fe3+). Reflecting its high oxidation state, FeO42- is a powerful oxidant.
2) It decomposes with evolution of O2 in neutral and especially rapidly in acidic water. The deep purple solutions are similar in appearance to potassium permanganate. K2FeO4 is stronger oxidizing agent than KMnO4.
3) Ferrate is an unusual form of iron combined with oxygen. It is usually unstable but researchers in Israel recently announced (13 AUG 99) that if ferrate is kept very pure in a caustic solution, it stays in a stable and usable form. As a dry solid, K2FeO4 is stable. At high pH, aqueous solutions are stable.

Potassium Ferrate(VI) / Super Paramagnetic Iron Key Applications:
1) It has attracted attention as a potential cathode material in a "Super iron battery." The Super-iron battery is a new class of rechargeable electric battery.
2) "Super-iron" is a moniker for a special kind of ferrate salt (Iron(VI) or Fe6), this is, potassium ferrate (K2FeO4) or barium ferrate (BaFeO4), used in this new class of batteries. Source: Wikipedia
3) Mr. Stuart Licht from the University of Massachusetts near Boston, MA states, "The super- iron cathode eventually turns into environmentally "green" iron rust. This is preferable over the often poisonous compounds, varying from mercury, cadmium, manganese, and nickel oxides that remain in many of the batteries presently used".
4) K2FeO4 has attracted interest for applications in "Green Chemistry" because the by-products of its use, iron oxides, are environmentally innocuous. In contrast, some related oxidants such as chromate are considered environmentally hazardous. The main difficulty with the use of K2FeO4 is that it is often too reactive, as indicated by the fact that it decomposes in contact with water.
5) Because the side products of its redox reactions are rust-like iron oxides, K2FeO4 has been described as a "green oxidant." for use in soil remediation. Indeed it has been employed for waste-water treatment as an oxidant for organic contaminants and as a biocide. Conveniently, the reduced iron(III) oxyhydroxide is an excellent flocculant.
6) In organic synthesis, K2FeO4 oxidizes primary alcohols.
