Babbitt Powder
Synonyms:
Babbitt powder, lead babbitts, alloys of lead, babbitts (hard), babbitts (marine), babbitts anti-friction (hard), babbitts anti-friction (original).
Designations:
Chemical Name: Lead-tin-antimony, lead-calcium-tin.
Chemical Formula: Pb-Sn-Sb, Pb-Ca-Sn
Description:
There are two types of lead babbitts: a) alloys of lead, tin, antimony and in many instances arsenic; and b) alloys of lead, calcium, tin and one or more of the alkaline earth elements
Babbitting is a process by which softer metals (basically tin/lead combinations) are bonded chemically or mechanically to a shell or stiffener, which supports the weight and torsion of a rotating, oscillating or sliding shaft.
The standard babbitt alloys (75Pb/15Sb/10Sn and 84Sn/8Sb/8Cu)
