Particle Surface Area

Definition:
Surface area is the Area of a given surface. Roughly speaking, it is the ``amount'' of a surface, and has units of distance squares. It is commonly denoted S for a surface in 3-D, or A for a region of the plane (in which case it is simply called the' Area.
Measuring Particle Surface Area by Gas Sorption:
By enveloping each particle with an adsorbed gas it is possible to determine the surface area of a sample which is usually reported as the surface area per gram (specific surface area). On certain coarse powders the specific surface area can be as low as a few square centimeters per gram, while on finer powders or porous materials the surface area can be larger then a football field or several thousand square meters per gram. The measured value of surface area can often be correlated with rates of dissolution and other rate-related phenomena, electrostatic properties of powder, light scattering, opacity, sintering properties, glazing, moisture retention and many other properties which can influence the processing and behavior of powders.
General Accepted Surface Area Formula:
4 pi x r2
Example Situation:
Surface area cube = 6 a 2 prism: (lateral area) = perimeter(b) L (total area) = perimeter(b) L + 2b sphere = 4 pi r2
Demonstration Of The Surface Area Formula:
Here is a concrete way to show why the surface area of a sphere is derived from the formula 4 pi x r2. Students should already understand that the surface area of an object can be represented by how much wrapping paper it would take to cover it. Ask them to then picture a sphere (a balloon or ball) and a piece of paper that is cut as wide as its diameter and as long as its circumference. If you wrap the ball with the paper, you see that it would cover the entire sphere if it weren't for all the overlaps (which would fit into the gaps if you cut them out). The formula for the surface area of the paper is: length x width = circumference x diameter. Now substitute formulas we know: C = 2 pi x r x d = 2 r C x d = 4 pi x r2 = surface area .
